Beef Prices

This year, our beef is priced at $2.10 per pound dressed weight, which is the carcass weight measured before bone and other byproducts are discarded. About half this weight will be edible beef. The total cost of an order depends on the processing fee, the size of the animal, and the amount of beef purchased. Price per pound is usually between $5.00 and $6.50 per pound of beef the customer takes home.

You can choose the cuts you would like! A typical order is 50% hamburger, with regular cuts of meat, but the Newhall Locker can package your meat specially, create custom sausage and beef sticks, include bones and organs in your order, and more. Note that special orders will increase the processing fee.

The locker beef system is a bit complex. We recommend that you read our Frequently Asked Questions before making a final decision about your order.

Please select from the options below to estimate the total cost of your order:

Animal Size

The size of the animal affects the amount of meat in a quarter, half, or full beef. The weights given are dressed weight, which is the carcass weight measured before bone and other byproducts are discarded. About half this weight will be edible beef.

Portion Size

We offer quarter, half, and whole portions of beef. Halves and quarters are taken lengthwise - you get equal portions of meat from both the front and back of the animal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does locker beef work?

We process our beef through the Newhall Locker in Newhall, Iowa. They are an FDA-certified facility, allowing us to provide the highest-quality products to our customers. The customer purchases the beef from us on a dressed hanging weight basis, and then pays the locker a processing fee. You can choose the package sizes, steak thicknesses, and cut options you would like.

How much beef are we talking about?

We sell beef in quarter, half, and whole increments. A typical steer will weigh 700 to 900 lbs dressed weight. Therefore, a half of beef would weigh about 400 lbs. Of that 400 lbs, about half is edible beef (the rest is bone, cartilage, etc). A customer that purchases a half a beef will get about 200 lbs of meat. Of that, there will be about 100 lbs of hamburger, and the rest will be steaks, roasts, stew beef, etc. 200 lbs of beef will usually fill a medium-size chest freezer. (Note that these numbers are estimates and the customer’s individual cut order may cause this to vary.)

If I just want a quarter of beef, do I have to take a front or back quarter?

No, the Newhall locker will split the half of beef so that you get half of both the front and back cuts.

When can I order?

Beef is available from May through October. We have 3 – 5 beef available each month.
