The total cost depends on the processing fee, the size of the animal, and the amount of beef purchased. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-locker-beef-work\">How does locker beef work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You purchase the beef from us, paying by the pound after the animal is harvested (between May &#8211; October), and then pay the locker a processing fee. You can pick up your order at the locker in Gilbert, Iowa or talk to us about delivery (for Vinton, Iowa and within Benton County only).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-beef-will-i-get\"><strong>How much beef will I get?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-\">We have quarter, half, and whole beef for sale. A half is about 200 lbs of meat &#8211; enough to fill a medium-size chest freezer! Many customers choose to split their order with friends or family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical order is 50% ground beef and 50% other cuts of meat, but you can choose the package sizes, add custom sausage and beef sticks, include bones and organs in your order, and more. Our herd of cows and calves feeds on grass (pasture) during the summer. Late in the summer the calves are started on oats, corn and hay as a supplement to their mother\u2019s milk. After weaning, the calves are fed twice daily on a diet of grass or alfalfa hay, ground ear corn, and silage (the whole corn plant chopped and fermented to preserve all of the nutrients). <strong>All of these are\u00a0our home-grown ingredients.<\/strong><br><br>As the calves grow, their diet changes to meet their needs. A protein supplement is added and the proportion of hay and silage is slowly reduced to favor corn. <strong>This allows the animal to grow quickly and produce a juicy,\u00a0tasty product\u00a0that is high in\u00a0protein, iron, and zinc.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-the-animals-have-a-good-life-before-harvest\"><strong>Do the animals have a good life before harvest?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You bet! All of the beef we sell were&nbsp;born on our farm&nbsp;in Vinton, Iowa. Brian checks on each group of cattle multiple times a day and provides round-the-clock care during calving season. Many of our herd cows have nicknames and some are retired show animals who love to follow us around hoping for a treat.<br><br>Beef calves spend their first summer grazing in our lush green pastures, then move to large lots with plenty of space, sunshine, clean bedding&nbsp;and shelter from bad weather. They have&nbsp;constant access&nbsp;to clean water, from the same well our family uses.<br><br>Our farm uses best practice, low-stress handling techniques designed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandin.com\/references\/new.corral.html\">Temple Grandin<\/a>&nbsp;whenever we work with our cattle. All of the beef we sell were&nbsp;born on our farm&nbsp;in Vinton, Iowa. Brian checks on each group of cattle multiple times a day and provides round-the-clock care during calving season. Many of our herd cows have nicknames and some are retired show animals who love to follow us around hoping for a treat. Beef calves spend their first summer grazing in our lush green pastures, then move to large lots with plenty of space, sunshine, clean bedding&nbsp;and shelter from bad weather. They have&nbsp;constant access&nbsp;to clean water, from the same well our family uses. Our farm uses best practice, low-stress handling techniques designed by&nbsp;Temple Grandin&nbsp;whenever we work with our cattle. All our animals are fed&nbsp;before we sit down to eat,&nbsp;and always given the best care right up to harvest. If I just want a quarter of beef, do I have to take a front or back quarter? No, the locker will split a half of beef so that you get half of both the front and back cuts.
